Costa Rica has plenty of magical surf spots that work along the year all over the Pacific shore and there is the Caribbean for those who think that size matters.
But there is a perfect place when it comes to learn how to surf. The fist baby steps in a surfboard are the life changing experience that makes the difference for the rest of our lives as surfers.
The wave is really important.
Back in the 80’s there was a Italian colony established in this side of Uvita. Right there was the very first Uvita’s graveyard. Then in the 90’s the Italians were gone and El Chaman restaurant rose in the main entrance to the beach. Colonia (colony) and Chaman. Those are the two names this magical wave has had so far.
Along with our 12 years of experience as Certified Surf Instructors we have found that there is no other wave for beginners like Playa Colonia aka Chaman in Uvita; and here is why.
Colonia has the sandy bottom that creates the perfect size waves for learning purposes. Protected by the safety of the bay, the long lines that softly break for a longer time are just what you need for your first rides and when your goal is balance after you stand you will find this feature an amazing plus.
The Colonia wave works in both, low and high tide, giving you a wider range of schedule to choose for practice. With an average of 3-4 feet, this long beach is never crowded and the conditions are always good for beginners.
Speaking of the place, as fancy as sounds you would be getting coached inside a pristine Marine National Park, with all the natural scenery as the perfect background for this unique experience.
Just like any other National Park you need to pay your ticket as a visitor, may be that is a hint of why the wave is never crowded, as not all the surf schools want to pay this fee for their surf lessons. But on the other hand, the ones that appreciate all the pluses don’t mind about it.
Once that you are an Uvita’s resident you don’t need to pay the ticket. If you desire you can surf Chaman every day and just be part of the people who care and protect this pristine surfing spot.
And then as you scale from beginner to intermediate, you will find this wave as your new favorite spot to continue developing your surfing skills.
The whole Uvita town is a surfer-friendly village ready to take great care of you. There are lots of activities, local eateries and places to visit that you would enjoy in the mid time.
And that magic combined brought the Sup Surf – Longboard and Masters National Tour in 2015. This wave has all the potential to become one of the venues for national tournaments but always protected by the Marino National Park flag and regulations.
In the past decade more grownups start to discover Uvita as their new home; Uvita has become the perfect place to enjoy nature in a peaceful environment. As the town grows in a different surfing culture based on it’s residents passion, Uvita is a real life paradise for those who enjoy the good old classic long boarding.
Good news, there is no such a thing as the “right age to start surfing” that makes lot of sense when you are living the perfect life and find yourself watching the perfect wave to learn, from the sand. You will end up trying. In the worse case scenario you wont become a world champion, in the real case scenario you will enjoy life even more.
